FAQs -
Mural Owners

What is the benefit of participating in the mural festival?

Wall owners directly contribute to thriving and creative communities where art in public places is valued and prioritized.

Your wall or business will benefit from receiving a stunning, professionally painted mural. Mural locations are highly promoted and business details are included when possible.

How do I get a mural painted on my building?

Applications are now open for the 2024 mural festival. Contact laurabeth@ecah.ca for more information.

Is there a fee to have a mural on my wall?

We accept applications from self-funded and community-funded walls. Self-funded means you or your business are providing the fee; community-funded means ECAH will try to source grant-funding for a portion of the wall.

We prioritize applications from wall owners with some funding available to contribute to the project.

Is the mural permanent?

Ideally yes for as long as the mural retains its cultural relevancy and physical integrity. If the building is sold, we ask that you include provisions for the transfer of the mural to the new owner.

Do I have to maintain the mural?

Yes. All mural owners must sign a maintenance agreement with the Township of Esquimalt (if located in Esquimalt) and the City of Victoria (if located in Victoria).

Do I get to choose the design?

Based on your application we will pair you with 2-3 artists matching the genres identified. You get to choose the final artist that creates the mural, however the artist retains creative license to design and develop the mural within the direction of the festival.

You will be able to review the final design prior to being painted with some wiggle room for tweaking. Full redesigns are discouraged and may incur additional fees.

We generally will not paint the following themes / genres:

  • Realistic portraits, family portraits or personal representations

  • Murals that promote a specific business or could be seen as ‘advertising’

Muralists

How do I become a muralist?

Applications for muralists for 2024 are yet to be announced - stay tuned!

How are muralists selected?

We prioritize local muralists who have a connection to the Lekwungen Territory. If you are located in another city, but have a connection to Esquimalt or Victoria, please send us a follow-up email to clarify.

We match muralists and wall owners based on genres and styles. Please ensure your portfolio or social channels are up-to-date with your most current work.

How are fees determined?

While we strive to pay industry standard rates, but are an emerging festival in our fourth year of operations. We rely on insecure grant funding and contributions from the private sector. We appreciate artists who understand that we are in the “building” stage of our festival and can be flexible with some costs.
